Summary

What would happen if we called on God for help and God actually appeared? In Mitch Albom’s profound new novel of hope and faith, a group of shipwrecked passengers pull a strange man from the sea。 He claims to be “the Lord。” And he says he can only save them if they all believe in him。

Adrift in a raft after a deadly ship explosion, nine people struggle for survival at sea。 Three days pass。 Short on water, food and hope, they spot a man floating in the waves。 They pull him in。

“Thank the Lord we found you,” a passenger says。

“I am the Lord,” the man whispers。

So begins Mitch Albom’s most beguiling and inspiring novel yet。

Albom has written of heaven in the celebrated number one bestsellers The Five People You Meet in Heaven and The First Phone Call from Heaven。 Now, for the first time in his fiction, he ponders what we would do if, after crying out for divine help, God actually appeared before us? What might the Lord look, sound and act like?

In The Stranger in the Lifeboat, Albom keeps us guessing until the end: Is this strange and quiet man really who he claims to be? What actually happened to cause the explosion? Are the survivors already in heaven, or are they in hell?

The story is narrated by Benji, one of the passengers, who recounts the events in a notebook that is later discovered—a year later—when the empty life raft washes up on the island of Montserrat。

It falls to the island’s chief inspector, Jarty LeFleur, a man battling his own demons, to solve the mystery of what really happened。

A fast-paced, compelling novel that makes you ponder your deepest beliefs, The Stranger in the Lifeboat suggests that answers to our prayers may be found where we least expect them。

Beautifully written, captivating… couldn’t put it down。 Generally not into books with religious undertones but this was something else。

The best thing I can say about this book was that it was short and helped me reach my target goal of books read more quickly。 However, it was painful。 Mitch Albom should stick with nonfiction。 This book was drivel。

Donna Monaghan

This was a very spiritually uplifting book!

Definitely not as good as his other books, and doesn’t focus on Devine intervention as much as I thought it was going to。 It does follow a parent’s story of grief and has some nice insight to help cope with loss。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A great book on life and grief and forgiveness and moving on。 Be grateful for the time we have with others and not the time "taken" from us。 Heaven is a wonderful place。 Forgive yourself。 Move past the hard things。 The Lord is always with us。 A great book on life and grief and forgiveness and moving on。 Be grateful for the time we have with others and not the time "taken" from us。 Heaven is a wonderful place。 Forgive yourself。 Move past the hard things。 The Lord is always with us。 。。。more

2。5 starsIt feels wrong to criticize The Stranger in the Lifeboat because it is so uninvolved, but as an allegorical piece I am reminded that it intrinsically welcomes critique and is in fact attempting to be profound。I’ll start with a few likes! I really enjoyed the Sea, News, Land triad in this book and I think they intertwined very well。 It’s a very nice presentation that drives the story well。 Speaking of which, I think the book is a great length and had a good cadence。I really like the inte 2。5 starsIt feels wrong to criticize The Stranger in the Lifeboat because it is so uninvolved, but as an allegorical piece I am reminded that it intrinsically welcomes critique and is in fact attempting to be profound。I’ll start with a few likes! I really enjoyed the Sea, News, Land triad in this book and I think they intertwined very well。 It’s a very nice presentation that drives the story well。 Speaking of which, I think the book is a great length and had a good cadence。I really like the intent of what Mitch was trying to accomplish。 Being Christian I appreciate so much of the imagery and found a fair bit of comfort in this piece。 Unfortunately, this is about where my likes run out。 If the message of this book is an attic, it is built on a foundation of toothpicks。 Although the attic looks substantial and inviting, it’s built on what might as well be no foundation at all…I’ll start with the plot which is full of massive implausibility and lacks motive。 Why was the Galaxy unaccompanied despite being filled with all the world’s richest people, bands, etc。? Why did LeFleur so severely break police protocol suddenly after years serving as a loyal cop, other than because “The notebook had narcotized him?” Benji, paternally abandoned at birth, certainly had struggles in his life。 However, I would question why a historically non-violent Benji decided it was best to commit mass first degree murder (malice & premeditation) to slaughter his father along with countless innocent people。 I assume most who enjoyed this book or Mitch himself would chalk these little issues up to “Christ’s will” or something of that vague sort, but I would say these issues only weaken the allegory and destabilize the message。 In fact, they are such weak points it’s almost hard to believe they were accidental…It feels like Mitch wrote this novel with Crayons for a heedless audience。 Simple descriptions are sketched out using cliches and such animated language that it borders unbearable at times。 A smoothie of philosophy and literature pureed to oblivion, if you will。There is lots to like here, but Mitch’s writing fell short in my opinion, which is his M。O。 in the case of fiction。 。。。more

Somewhat captivating but focus on God was a little heavy handed for me。

This book is more about the lessons we come out with any time we're caught in a tragic situation that threatens our lives, and that leads us to take drastic actions which often may end in conflict。 It reveals a common thing among humans, which is their ability to call on any deity in moments of trouble, I guess sometimes our faith leads to our survival。Stranger in a boat exploits that by tying several themes together: religion, class warfare, tragedies/trauma, and survival。 The Lord's response I This book is more about the lessons we come out with any time we're caught in a tragic situation that threatens our lives, and that leads us to take drastic actions which often may end in conflict。 It reveals a common thing among humans, which is their ability to call on any deity in moments of trouble, I guess sometimes our faith leads to our survival。Stranger in a boat exploits that by tying several themes together: religion, class warfare, tragedies/trauma, and survival。 The Lord's response I want to imagine is exact to about how any person (believer or not) feels sometimes, frustrating, and I want to believe you caught some "thoughts and prayers" vibe we so often like to send。 The TV reports however offer much-needed intervals to the chapters。 。。。more

Not a fan of this book。 I never felt a connection to the characters or the story。 I finished it to see the ending but it wasn’t hard to figure it out early on。 I’m guessing this was meant to be enlightening… but to me it wasn’t。 Disappointed and don’t recommend。

When people pass, we ask why God took them。 But what we should ask is why God gave them to us? What did we do to deserve their love?

the lifeboatI found the book very moving。 I loved it all but especially the end。 I couldn’t put it down。 I recommend it to all

I listened to the audiobook version and it was a pleasant distraction as I did mindless tasks。 I have rounded up my rating to a four but it was really not much over a three。 The story was a bit predictable and the characters were quite contrived。 And the ending was implausible - even to a person of faith。

The Stranger in the LifeboatBy Mitch AlbomI have been a fan of Mitch Albom's work since "Tuesdays with Morrie"。 Every new book seems to open the reader to new thoughts and ideas。 This one is no exception。There are two stories here: the story of a despairing police inspector and his wife who lost their only child to an accident and lost their way back to life and each other – and the story of 11 people in a lifeboat lost at sea after a yacht explodes and sinks。Inspector LeFleur meets a stranger n The Stranger in the LifeboatBy Mitch AlbomI have been a fan of Mitch Albom's work since "Tuesdays with Morrie"。 Every new book seems to open the reader to new thoughts and ideas。 This one is no exception。There are two stories here: the story of a despairing police inspector and his wife who lost their only child to an accident and lost their way back to life and each other – and the story of 11 people in a lifeboat lost at sea after a yacht explodes and sinks。Inspector LeFleur meets a stranger named Rom Rosh who tells him he has found a life raft washed up on the beach on the island of Monserrat。 Rom leads the inspector to the raft in which there is no trace of anyone having been in it – except for a hand-written journal of sorts which the inspector decides to hide until he can read it。At this point, the story breaks into three distinct sets of chapters – Land (which is what happens on Monserrat); Sea (which is what happened a year before in the lifeboat); and News (which is the media coverage of the story)。I was intrigued by this presentation。 There is much to mull over concerning God; the nature of faith; why things happen as they do; whether we face the trials of this world alone or whether there is a presence always with us。 I don't think it matters much whether or not the reader is a believer – Mr。 Albom certainly is。 And he leaves the reader with the hope that he is right。 。。。more

What an amazing book。 I was reminded of The Shack in the fact that God was presented as an unexpected human。 This was deeply moving and well written。
